A/C Troubleshooting: Unit Won’t Turn On

A/C Troubleshooting: Unit Won't Turn OnIf you’ve tried to turn on your air conditioner with no success, you may be wondering if you’re going to need to invest in a costly repair or a complete replacement. It’s rare that a cooling system experiences a catastrophic breakdown with no warning, so the problem with your A/C is more likely among the following minor issues.

  • Incorrect thermostat settings: If the thermostat is set too high, the A/C won’t come on. The thermostat must also be set to cooling rather than heating to get the system to work. Check these settings at the thermostat and make adjustments.
  • Thermostat failure: Programmable thermostats can fail and need to be replaced. More often, what looks like a failure is simply run-down batteries. If the screen is blank, put in new batteries and see if the air conditioner can be started. If new batteries don’t solve the problem, you’ll likely need to replace the entire thermostat.
  • Clogged air filter: If air filters in the system get dirty and clogged, they prevent proper airflow. This can keep the air conditioner from work and, if some cases, can even damage the A/C components. Put in a fresh, new filter and see if that helps.
  • Tripped circuit breaker: A power surge associated with the air conditioner could have caused the circuit breaker to trip. Find the breaker in the main circuit box and reset it. If the circuit breaker continues to trip, you should have the problem checked out by your electrician.
  • Refrigerant loss: Air conditioners need refrigerant, a liquid essential for cooling operations. If the system loses refrigerant through leaks, it might not turn on or, if it does, it won’t cool properly. Your HVAC professional can find and fix the leak and add enough refrigerant to get the system working properly again.
