Save Big on Energy Bills With These Small HVAC Changes

Save Big on Energy Bills With These Small HVAC ChangesWith a few small changes in your energy habits and practices, you can obtain meaningful savings on your utility bills. While any one of these small changes might not save a bundle, when you add them up, you’ll realize big savings. Try the following:

  • Install a programmable thermostat if you don’t have one already. You can program energy-saving setbacks for each day of the week, so the thermostat automatically dials back heating or cooling when nobody’s home, or at night in the winter when everybody’s sleeping. The thermostat can be programmed to return to your comfort level shortly before you expect to arrive home. If you already have a programmable thermostat, consider trying indoor temperatures a couple degrees higher (summer) or lower (winter) than you’re accustomed to. Most people acclimate quickly to a slightly different temperature.
  • Block the sun’s warming rays in the summer with curtains, shades, blinds or drapes over sun-facing windows. It can make several degrees’ difference in indoor temperature, and give your cooling system a break.
  • Use ceiling fans in the summer to add a cooling effect to your rooms. While the air movement won’t actually change the temperature, the effect of cooling is the next best thing. You can save energy then by raising the thermostat temperature by a few degrees without noticing any loss of comfort.
  • Check air filters on your furnace or A/C every month during the heating and cooling seasons, and change them when they get clogged with dust and debris. A clean filter allows for smooth airflow (and cleaner air), which allows your HVAC equipment to operate more efficiently and inexpensively.
  • Keep forced-air vents and registers clean and free of barriers such as carpets, drapes, furniture and other objects.
  • Schedule annual maintenance on both your cooling and heating systems. A well-maintained A/C, heat pump or furnace will consume energy more efficiently, saving you on your monthly energy bills.
