Tips to Maintaining Your Furnace in the Off-Season

Tips to Maintaining Your Furnace in the Off-SeasonJust because it’s warm outside, that doesn’t mean you should ignore your home’s furnace. In fact, the off-season is the perfect time to concentrate on your heating equipment in order to protect your home and keep your energy costs low.

Hire an HVAC Contractor

Once per year, you need to hire a professional to service your furnace. This will not only ensure the best energy efficiency possible but will prolong the system’s operating life. The off-season is the perfect time to get this done because you don’t have to worry about freezing your toes off while waiting for service.

Check the Air Filter

Typically, the rule of thumb is that you want to change your furnace’s air filter after 1-3 months of use, depending on how much debris is being collected from your home’s air. At the end of the last winter season, though, you probably didn’t check the filter’s condition. Now’s the time to get that done and replace it if needed.

Take a Look Inside the Furnace

Every season, dirt and debris collects inside your furnace and impedes air flow that can reduce your furnace’s energy efficiency and waste money. Open up the system and clean out anything you find. Just remember, for the sake of safety, unplug the furnace before you go inside.

Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector

The dangers of CO exposure simply cannot be understated. If your home experiences a gas leak, it can make occupants sick or even become fatal. A carbon monoxide detector will protect your home and your loved ones from the dangers of a faulty furnace. Even if your furnace has been serviced and is running perfectly, you simply don’t want to take the chance. Either install a CO detector or, if you already have one, run its testing option.
