Here’s How You Can Troubleshoot Your Air Conditioner

Here's How You Can Troubleshoot Your Air ConditionerYour air conditioner sure works up a sweat to keep your Traverse City home cool. Scheduled preventive maintenance helps ensure it does its job efficiently without any problems. Though, there are so many parts and functions your A/C system performs that, sooner or later, issues are bound to occur. Use these troubleshooting tips if your A/C system is acting up.

Check the Air Filter

Your air conditioner’s air filter is an essential, yet simple device that helps keep your A/C system running smoothly. The filter is so important that it can cause major problems (and higher energy bills) if it is neglected. Check the filter to make sure it isn’t wet or clogged with dirt.

Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil is the part which removes heat from warm airflow using cold refrigerant. The evaporator becomes so cold, in fact, that a light layer of frost often forms. However, there are many potential A/C problems that can cause a thick layer of ice to accumulate on the coil, and stop air cooling.

To access the evaporator, you may need to remove two panels at the air handler. If you do see ice buildup on the evaporator, turn off the A/C and allow the ice to thaw (don’t chip away at it). Additionally, if the filter was dirty and you replaced it, the evaporator may be fine once the ice melts.

Restart the A/C system and keep an eye on the evaporator. If ice buildup occurs again, turn off the A/C and call your HVAC technician.

Condenser Coil

Check the outdoor cabinet of your A/C system for debris, weeds or anything else that blocks airflow to the unit. The cabinet contains a second coil called the condenser. This coil releases heat outdoors. If it is overly dirty, your A/C system may not be able to keep up with the cooling load. Use a garden hose or, better yet, a foaming coil cleaner spray to clean the coil.
