Make Sure Your Home is Prepared While You’re on Spring Vacation

Make Sure Your Home is Prepared While You're on Spring VacationWith all the planning that it takes for a spring vacation, one thing that many people forget is also one of the most important — the home they’re leaving behind. So, if you’re getting ready for a trip, don’t take off until you have these bases covered:

Turn Off Your Thermostat

Running your heating or cooling system while you’re out of town will be nothing but a waste of energy and money. The easiest way to handle this is to turn off your thermostat while you’re gone.

Leave a Light On

By leaving at least one light on while you’re on your spring vacation, you can keep potential criminals from realizing that your home is an easy target. If you’re going to be away for a while, put the lights on a timer.

Shut Down the Water Heater

Like all of your appliances, the water heater won’t be doing anything while you’re gone. If you don’t turn it off, however, the water will continue to remain heated, which will use energy for no good reason.

Monitor Your Home Through a Smartphone

Even with all the precautions in the world, nothing quite beats being at home to make sure everything is running smoothly. Luckily, the next best thing can be found on your smartphone in the form of an app, where you can monitor your home through a webcam.

Stop Your Mail, Newspapers, Etc.

You don’t want passersby to know that you’re away from home, because you never know when a “bad guy” might be among them. To avoid mail and whatnot stacking up, put holds on everything.

Ask a Neighbor for Help

Find a trusted neighbor who will watch your house for you while you’re out of town. Give this person a key in case of an emergency. And if he or she can park in your driveway, people who drive by will think you’re home.
