Ways to Save Money and Increase Energy Efficiency this Season

Ways to Save Money and Increase Energy Efficiency this SeasonImproving your home’s energy efficiency for winter cuts energy costs without having to sacrifice any comfort. The steps you take to save energy also help lengthen the life of your major appliances and increase home safety.

  • Have your heating system serviced. Your heating system will perform better with professional maintenance, be safer and use less fuel over the long heating season. HVAC professionals clean and adjust all the components and test the safety equipment. Adjustments to the fuel-to-air ratio assure you that the system burns as clean as possible, which also lowers fuel consumption.
  • Check the air filter routinely. When your furnace runs frequently, check the air filter monthly. A dirty filter increases fuel consumption by slowing the air flowing through the furnace, forcing the system to run longer.
  • Lower the thermostat. As the thermometer drops, adjust the temperature to 68 degrees when you’re at home and lower it at night or when you leave your home. Installing a programmable thermostat is the most convenient way to manage home temperatures automatically.
  • Deal with the water heater. Heating water in the winter takes more energy than in the summer, but you can easily improve its energy efficiency by draining a few quarts of water from the tank once every few months to remove the solids that collect at the bottom. Turning its temperature down to 120 degrees also cuts water heating costs. If you notice that the outside of the tank feels warm, wrap it with an insulating blanket. Home improvement centers sell them in various sizes and materials. These jackets slow the standby losses that increase the amount of energy the water heater uses.
  • Check the insulation. Adequate attic insulation slows the movement of heat from your ceilings into the attic. Not only does this reduce heat loss, it also helps prevent dangerous and costly ice dams.
